Do piercing and tattoos in adolescent ages necessarily mean a cry for help?

Hi, my son is 17 years old and these days all he talks about is piercing and tattoos. It's not like I will forbid him that, but I would like to know if his desire for that means a cry for help? Is it necessary for me to talk to him about it, I know that adolescent age might be very difficult?
