I have had ankle synovitis for about 4 months with treatment from podiatrist for 6 weeks which included dry needling, strapping, foot manipulation and massage, and orthotics. My ankles are slow to heal and it has been recommended to have Hydrodilation on them to assist the healing. Can anyone advise if this is safe and the benefits? I understand this is done on frozen shoulders.

Hello.

Hydrodilation, also known as hydrodistension, is a medical procedure used to treat various joint-related conditions, including frozen shoulders and ankle synovitis. Here are some general considerations regarding hydrodilation:

  1. Safety: Hydrodilation is generally considered a safe procedure when performed by experienced healthcare providers. However, as with any medical intervention, there are potential risks and complications, such as infection, bleeding, or damage to surrounding tissues. Your healthcare provider will discuss these risks with you and ensure that you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.

  2. Procedure: During hydrodilation, a sterile solution (often a combination of saline and a local anesthetic) is injected into the joint capsule to expand it. This can help stretch the joint capsule and improve joint mobility. The procedure is usually done under local anesthesia or sedation, and it may be guided by ultrasound or fluoroscopy for accuracy.

  3. Benefits: The primary goal of hydrodilation is to alleviate pain and improve joint mobility. It can help break up adhesions within the joint capsule and reduce inflammation, which may lead to better function and reduced discomfort.

  4. Recovery: After hydrodilation, you may experience some discomfort and swelling around the treated joint. Your healthcare provider will provide post-procedure instructions to manage these symptoms, which may include rest, ice, and gentle exercises to maintain joint mobility.

  5. Effectiveness: The effectiveness of hydrodilation can vary from person to person. Some individuals experience significant relief of symptoms, while others may require additional treatments or therapies. Your healthcare provider will monitor your progress and determine the need for any follow-up care.

Hope this helps.
