intense cardio on empty stomach

Hi, I have one dilemma. I am doing gym training three times a week. On the other days I do cardio. I have that routine established last two months. I am doing my cardio in the morning and it is very intense. My question is should I do it on empty stomach or to eat something?

I was just wondering when the best time and how many times a day you should take protein shakes. I used to take a scoop of promax every 3 hours several times a day and found that I gained more fat than muscle!. Cheers
