Breaking humerus in four locations!

My brother has sustained a serious arm injury a week ago. He fell from a bicycle while driving really fast downhill and he ended up with breaking humerus in four locations! Doctors said that he will need a lot of time to heal properly and I wonder if there is anything I could do to help him.

Dealing with the pain because of the burnt arm

What can you tell me about dealing with the pain because of the burnt arm? It was a second degree burn that happened because of my recklessness and even with creams and ointments I cannot get rid of the pain and itching. Is it safe for me to use painkillers? What would you do?
