Okay... Is it normal to try to perform a spinal tap 18 times?

 I was wondering. if it is normal to try to perform a spoinal tap 18 times. this is what happened to my 19 yr old son. can you damage a disc ? My son just found out he has five fractures vertebra.  Can someone let me know if any of this could be contributed to the spinal taps?
