lump on back of neck left side

My ten year old son came home with a lump on the back of his neck, on the left side, today. He says it is itchy, and indeed it is a bit red, and he says he didn't fall or get in a fight or anything like that. What do you think this could be? Should I be concerned and call a doctor?
