Hello! Angiokeratomas are small dark red to purple raised spots. They may also have a rough scaly surface. They are composed of surface blood vessels (dilated capillaries). If they are accidentally scratched, they may become crusty and bleed, or they can form in the lesion (thrombosis), and change the colour to dark purple or black overnight. The cause of angiokeratomas is unknown. Fordyce Angiokeratoma is mostly found on the scrotum, but there could be some on the shaft of the penis, labia majora of the vulva, inner thigh and lower abdomen. They usually appear in men over 40, but women can get it too. There could be one or many ( like over 100 ). They are usually small, but in older people they tend to get larger. Angiokeratomas are actually harmless surface vascular lesions that can usually be left alone. If bleeding becomes a concern or treatment is requested for cosmetic purposes, they can be removed by excision, laser therapy, cryotherapy or electrocautery.
