How to recognize Alpers syndrome?

I was hearing all about Alpers syndrome and it really made me think for a moment. If my child had Alpers syndrome, I would want to be able to recognize the condition, and if possible in a very early stage too. So, how does one recognize Alpers syndrome? What are the first signs and symptoms?
