How to diagnose an unstable fracture of the humerus?

I need some help with my problem. I am 38 years old and it seems like I am having an unstable humerus fracture, at least that is what a friend of mine, a doctor told me. I do feel a lot of pain but the arm seems ok, although I cannot use it properly. How to diagnose this, should I go to the doctor?
