Can broken fragments of skull bruise the brain ?

Yesterday my friend had an accident and he got a head injury. His doctor told that he had a skull fracture but it’s not so severe and that he thinks that everything will be ok. I hope so. But can somebody tell me, please, can broken fragments of skull bruise the brain? Thanks!
