gums swollen and red.

Yesterday when I was brushing my teeth I have noticed that my gums do not look properly. Gums were swollen and red, when I touch it it started to bleed, not much but enough to scare me. I would like to know what I may expect when I go to my dentist as I am pretty much afraid of him.
