Superior Laryngeal Nerve damage from throidectomy

I had a hemithroidectomy 19 years ago. The superior larngeal nerve as damaged so that is functioned about 40%. Lately swallowing and speaking for any lengthy period have become difficult. Is this to be expected? And how can I better cope with it? Thank you.
