Hi, I have a 15 year old daughter who has been suffering from depression for the last 6 months. The depression started after the hurricane affected our town and we had to move.
We had to ask for medical assistance doctor recommended Amitiriptyline. How safe would it be for her?

Amitryptiline is not used in the treatment of children under the age of 18 because serious side effects can be noticed. Side effects which could appear are: changes in behaviour, suicidal behavior, worry, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, acting without thinking, severe restlessness. If your doctor still decides to prescribe her Amitriptyline you have to watch out for her behavior and if any side effect symptoms are noticed you should immediately report them to the doctor. Decision on antidepressant is always sensitive case because these are very powerful and dangerous drugs, and every person can react in different way.
