baby passing hard stoole

my baby boy is 7 months old and he is passing hard stoole. He strains when he tries to poop and it sometimes comes out rock hard. Is this painfull? My mohter-in-law says that straining for boys could hurt them down there, is this true? should i be concerned? thanks
