quiting vs. weening down

If someone is addicted to heroin and they get pregnant is it possible to hurt or even kill the baby by quitting cold turkey? This is someone with a fairly high tolerance to heroin, 1/2 - 2 or 3 grams a day and she is 3-4 weeks along. THANK YOU.
