Should i run longer or shorter routes as a begginer?

I have been a sprinter in track for the past two years. Over the summer i have begun to run longer distances.....one mile to the Y. I was wondering if i go out for 30-45 minutes just jogging not running, would it hurt because i just started running long? Should i keep it short like 15 minutes?...
