I was wanting to know what the drug Serequel is prescribed to treat...and also more side affects of the drug if you were not prescribed it.

I am taking seroquel for my depression and anxiety. I find it really good at regulating my sleeping problems. I had troubles falling asleep but this drug helped me grow out of it.
I have regular check-ups with my doc and he is assessing my condition while on this drug. I think you can only get it by prescription.
How did you think to get it without?
Anyway, seroquel is primarily approved for schizophrenia and bipolar. It is also used for some other disorders.
I was told to report any strange symptoms but I didn’t have any if I ignore weight gain.

Since you obviously have internet access why don't you just google a question like this instead of relying on people who may or may not know or be giving you correct information?

I take serequel for Post Traumatic Stress disorder and treatment resistant depression. It is the only medication that the Dr. and I have found that controls the nightmares and flashbacks. The weight gain has been nothing compared to Xyprexa, which I used to be on. Because of a screw up with medicaid I couldn't take my Serequel last night and I slept a whopping 1/2 hr all night and nightmared during that 1/2 hour. I really believe without the Serequel I probably would have comitted suicide a long time ago.

This is my story and , yes its long but , read on it might also appeal to you or someone you know.
I have been taking Serequel as prescribed by my doctor since
August/September 2006.
This is the forth anti depression drug prescribed to me for long term
depression which I was diagnosed with in the August 2004.
Partly because of my youth , PTST (military) , ADHD, for which I was only recently diagnosed with , after 4 psychiatric tests . and for which I take METHYLPHENIDATE 10mg. This is a prescribed drug that I will have to take for the rest of my natural life . Its a drug that is , as I always thought , prescribed to over active children if they are diagnosed with ADHD & to be honest I was not even aware that adults could have the same symptoms , but then again even adults are , susceptible to the same symptoms.
I have also suffered, if you want to call it that... from hearing voices in my mind . The voices in my mind are gone now because of Serequel , except for my own voice which is just myself thinking , & that’s normal.
At first , this was strange to me because I have had the experience of hearing voices in my mind for as long as I can remember. It was to me normal and what more they were my
own , it was like a good and a bad voice that were always telling me what I had
to do.
For example : the bad voice would tell me to do something untoward and the
other would tell me not too as it would be wrong . The fight in my head went
on and on .
In April 2004 my farther died of cancer and shortly after I could
here him talking to me in my mind . It was as if he replaced the good voice .
In 2006 I started taking Serequel .
At first I was prescribed 50mg for the first 4 weeks , unusually I was given
the freedom after that from my doctor to up my doses without first consulting him . All I had to do was let him know how much I wanted to take so he could write out my prescription .
After about three months I was on 600mg , 800mg being the maximum as stated in any doctors medical advice book .
This was acceptable for my doctor who did not even advise me that it might have been to much to soon.
Its now June 2007 and I really do not feel any better for taking the drug mood wise .
I did in the first few months , or at least I think I did .
People who know me said they saw a difference in my behaviour so it must be
true .
I spoke to my doctor about upping my doses to the max of 800mg , but my
doctor and my psychiatrist said that that was not necessary and it probably
would not make me feel any different . Obviously I was not happy because I thought that if I took the max which is 800mg I would feel good if not better, at least for a while .
I have read what others have to say about their experiences with Serequel
and most are positive .
I have also read on the internet that long term use can cause Diabetes and
other serious conditions.
This is worrying for me because slowly but surely I acquired a craving for
sweet things like chocolate and ice-cream. I never used to be a person for
anything sweet unless I really wanted it , & that was very rare.
Now its a daily occurrence and it seems to be getting worse.
I have even stopped eating normal meals on a daily bases and replacing them
with my sweet tooth craving. I have not gained any weight which seems
strange but I am loosing weight instead.
I have not read anyone saying that they have the same experience as myself
but other side affects like headaches for example. I also suffered from
headaches but this has gotten less in time , but I do still have them . From the start I fell asleep within the hour of taking Serequel and had a lot of difficulty getting out of bed the next morning or even getting into a normal routine .
My doctor , now a female doctor (which does not really matter) , who replaced my first doctor because he passed away , says that not everything is known about all the possible side
effects of taking Serequel , and the sweet tooth craving , besides the headaches and sleeping a lot , was for her a first . I have also experienced from time to time heart burn and an irregular heart beat that causes me to feel faint or even a bit nauseous .
I also have had a tingling sensation round my genital area and at the top of my legs
in the first hour or so of taking Serequel . Its like an itch that I could not
scratch and that is dammed annoying .
As for the long term side effects she could not tell me .
I am concerned about the rapports I have read on a medical info internet site about Serequel [just type in `long term use of Serequel´, in GOOGLE to see] , causing Diabetes and or other symptoms like Hyperglycaemia , which could explain my sweet tooth .
On one of the many internet sites I was on [in American] , are rapports of law suites being made against the producer company of Serequel , ‘and believe me there are a lot’ , this because there was no mention of certain possible side effects that could be life threatening when taken long term . A couple of which I have already mentioned earlier . The rapports of test being done on ex service personnel who suffer from PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder , where after long term usage of Serequel , there were casualties who suffered from heart still stand as only one to mention .
In the U.S.A. they have what is called ‘the black box label’, this is the highest degree of warnings that by law , must be printed on the paper that is to be found in all medicine boxes or printed on the labels on medicine bottles .
Unfortunately in the U.S.A. this is not the case as also is not the case in Europe .
Only in Japan has this law been applied as far as I could find out and that was in the late 90’s.
By the way , I am as normal as anyone else , but with a few major hick ups and I must apologise for such a long read but please understand that Serequel is a prescribed controlled drug that as far as I have found out on various websites , can be in the long term harmful but not to everyone that its prescribed too . It is a useful drug that is prescribed to give people who suffer from depression balance in their mood to lead as normal a life as possible .
As for myself , even after investigating the information I found , shall take Serequel as prescribed by my doctor and with the advice from my psychiatrist for as long as they feel or think necessary , but I will certainly carry on making notes of the effects and the symptoms I experience as I feel that to be very important . I advise everyone to do the same as Serequel is a relativly new drug .
REMEMBER , ONE MANS MEDICINE IS ANOTHER MANS POISON .

It seems like everyone that has posted a comment has had some very good results, but you asked about the negative side effects
I was put on serequel when I was 17 years old, to control my behavior after withdrawing from meth and heroin. After taking this medication, I started to see images of people and things, that weren't really there. I got lost walking to the school that I had gone to since I was in elementary school, and along the way almost got hit by a semi, because I was so heavily medicated. I couldn't understand what people were saying, and because of that my dad told me that he didn't know what to do, he was thinking of putting me in a nursing home at 17 years old. I quit taking this medication, and within a week I wawe s back to myself And I have also stayed clean from all other drugs too Because of serequel I have also taken nothing besides an IB Profin and I don't take that too much either
I just found out yesterday that my grandmother with Deminitia is taking Serequel, and I couldn't do anything but CRY! She is having some of the same results
One hour to one and a half hour after taking her meds, she has these dizzy spells and faints, you have to touch her and help her up before she wakes back up. It wasn't until we saw a pattern of these fainting spells that we realized it was her medication She is going to the Doc today to get off Serequel.
I am basically saying that this is NOT a drug to mess around with. I am a recovering meth and heroin addict and it is not that that scares me to death, its SEREQUEL that keeps me scared!

I have been on Serequel for about 5 years now. I also had PTSD and was put on this, as I suffered dibilitating anxiety attacks. I don't feel like fainting or any of the above mentioned Bad effects. The bad effect I am dealing with is that it has attacked my lower teeth to the roots. Because of this I have to have all my bottom teeth removed and get a denture for my bottom. I have always taken care of my teeth and it just makes me so mad that this has happened. Today I had my 4 lower front teeth removed, I felt like crying at the dentist as I have always had beautiful teeth. I have been through so much pain with my teeth since I started having to take Serequel. It just makes me wonder what this medicine is doing to the rest of my body if it can chew teeth apart.
The one thing I love about this medicine is that it works ! I no longer have anxiety attacks..ever and the Serequel just makes me feel 'normaL' . I don't feel 'high' or drowsy on it...just normal, which is a blessing to me. I can't even comprehend the thought of going back to the way I 'used' to be, before Serequel.
I know of one other person who is 28 that has to take it. He is right now going through the same thing as I am Dentally speaking, although he has been trying the 'root-canal' routine. He underwent many surgeries , and of course the root-canal option did not work. He now has to have all teeth pulled. It's alot of pain to go through for a medicine.
I was told by a person that read the side-effects for Serequel, that this is happening more and more to people who need to take it.
I also developed a ' Major' sweet tooth with this med. I could live on sweets. Before this med, I never ate sweets. I am sure that also damaged my teeth a bit....but...it is the Serequel that did it ultimatly.
PEOPLE take better care of your teeth while on Serequel , so this doesn't happen to you ! Believe me, no-one wants to go through what I have been going through ! If ANYONE is having teeth chipping or losing teeth, please write to me or respond, as I would liuke to know if anyone out there is going though this....thanks so much !

What is serequel for?
Well I was diagnosed with schizophrenia almost seven years ago
and I have been taking serequel 600mg daily as perscribed by my
doctor for the last five years and I have never felt better.\
What are the side effects?
I take 600mg all at once and it makes me feel relaxed and sleepy for the first half but after that I feel fine. Believe me 600mg is more than enough to put you quickly to bed.

I read everyone else story, and I truly believe that serequel is not for everyone. I love it though, at first I was diagnosed with depression, but after trying paxil, wellbutrin, and a few others, to no avail nothing helped me. I was either falling asleep and sleeping all day, or flipping out on everyone constantly, finally I got put on lexapro, it worked great for 2 weeks then I got tmj and my jaw hurt constantly. Well after reevaluating me they decided I have bipolar not depression, and put me on serequel. I can only take half of a 50 mg tablet a night. it puts me right to sleep and I feel great in the morning. If I don't take this I may sleep 2 hours a night, have gone days without sleeping. Not that I don't try cause I do, it sucks laying in bed at night for hours trying to sleep and can't . But I can't believe there are people taking 600 mg. I started out taking one fourth of my 50 mg tablet because it would immediately put me to sleep but the next day I felt like I was on a tranquilizer all day, it was really hard to get out of the bed in the morning. But now my body has built up a tolerance for it, I did experience the irregular heart beat thing that someone else was talking about. And I did gain weight on this medication. I have went on a diet and lost 15 pounds so far, but I only take my serequel 2 times a week, until I get to my weight loss goal. Also I wanted to add that I have bad migraines, and again have been through every medication from topomax to different kinds of prescribed narcotics, nothing ever worked, topomax gave me bad side effects my hands and feet and face would constantly go numb. But the serequel actually helps me, when I feel a migraine coming I take a little over half of the pill and I sleep it off, I'll sleep for 10 hours usually and it will be gone or very dull when I wake up. That surprised me. but I think this drug is safe if used right. but then again I'm no doctor!
