Usual diabetes sporting advice from doctors?

Can I ask what the normal advice is that doctors give to people who suffer from any kind of diabetes? Is it OK for those with diabetes to engage in high intensity sports? I am a PE teacher at a high school, and one of my pupils has Type II diabetes, which is why I would like to find out about this....
