If someone has gestational diabetes, and they are significantly overweight in their last 8 weeks of pregnancy, taking prenatal vitamins and drinking plenty of water; why is it not okay to fast, or severely restrict caloric intake for the remainder of the pregnancy? Everything we've read so far states that Low blood sugar is not a huge risk other than an increased possibility of fainting, in which case you would definitely eat something small to stabilize your sugar, but high sugar levels are an extreme cause for concern. If someone has extra fat stores wouldn't this be a significant amount of fuel for pregnancy toward the end? we are assuming the answer is "fasting is never a good idea while pregnant", but we haven't seen all the criteria we were looking for: Gestational Diabetes, obesity, third trimester pregnancy, fasting to lower and maintain blood sugars, preventing a macrosomic infant. It is a lot easier not to eat at all than to constantly watch what you eat and spread it out 6-8 times throughout the day.


There can be several short term or long term effects of fasting during pregnancy. Many women choose to fast even if they are pregnant. Fasting during pregnancy could increase a woman's risk for premature birth. Mothers who experience extreme nausea and vomiting during first trimester should not consider fasting. Practicing waterless fast can have adverse effects on your baby. Your baby may suffer from dehydration.

Pregnant women or nursing mothers need constant supply of essential nutrition, vitamins, proteins, folic acid, and minerals. They need to keep track of their nutrition intake for the wellbeing of themselves and their babies. Fasting may effect the development of the fetus. Fasting in pregnancy carries certain risks for the unborn baby such as abnormal breathing movements, low birth weight, and reduced gestational period.
