What effect on children development does diabetes have?

I was reading that there is a growing number of children in the US who are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Apparently, some children are very young when they are first diagnosed, and the numbers are still on the rise. What effect does diabetes have on child development, if I may ask?
