Is it okay to sometimes stop running during a marathon?

Answered by a doctor

during long and tempo runs-- often enough that I'm a bit worried. I'm training for my first marathon from a program in a book from the track store. I've never done runs this long (max before was 10-12 miles) or tempos. I stopped 4-5 times during 20 miles on Sunday. I didn't really have to stop...

Why are my times not improving?

I've been running, off and on, for 25 years but I'm having a tough time building mileage on this start up. I trained for and ran a half marathon last spring in 1:57 on 25 miles a week. After that I took some time off but maintained a base of 10 miles a week or so. Now I can't seem to get past 3...
