Dangerous sun rays and treatment of Vitamin D insufficiency in children

I have heard that sun rays might be helpful when dealing with lack of the vitamin D. But aren’t the sun rays dangerous? I mean, I know that vitamin D insufficiency in children could be dealt with the appliance of that vitamin and that is it. Why are those sun rays needed at all?
