This is a very hard topic to discuss as well as approach since weight gain in people with bipolar can even make them feel more down and just the thought of having to exercise regularly is not so appealing to healthy individuals and not to mention those who have troubles with their moods and depression.
First of all, she is the one who needs to become conscience of the problem and realize that if she doesn’t get rid of that excessive weight, she could experience health problems and that it may certainly influence her mood if it hasn’t already.
Luckily she has you to support her and maybe even push her into physical activity and some dieting, because there is no other way-in my opinion. Physical activity not only does it burn calories but it also influence mood-positively.
You could talk to her doc about either changing the medicines and prescribe those that those cause weight gain or reduce the dosage of the current medicines, so that she would experience less side effects.
