Hi! I have been put on toprol two months ago and I am not sure I have been taking it very well. Although my blood pressure is back to normal I have been having troubles sleeping. I called my doc when it first started happening and he said it would go away once my body adjusts to the drug but the thing is that it is not going away. I still have problem with insomnia. My husband has been taking hydrochlorot for five years and hasn’t had one side effect. Should I demand to be switched to hydrochlorot? Thank you

Even if your doctor switches the drugs, it doesn’t mean that you won’t have side effects with this other drug because every person reacts differently to drugs. It is very hard to find a hypertension drug to suit perfectly and many people decide to put up with the side effects if a drug does the work. However, insomnia is an annoying side effect, one you should certainly not put up with. It could only make you stressed more. I would suggest you talked to the doctor, see if the drug is causing insomnia, (it could be (pre)menopause if you are around that age) and if there’s a way to lower the dosage. I heard recently that all patients who have been taking beta blockers will be switched to other medications soon.
