Why is carb/protein ratio so good for you?

Okay, we've all heard the CORRECT ratio of carbs to protein is 3 or 4 to 1. Does anyone know WHY it is better then say 5 or 6 to 1? Or even WHY is it better then 1 to 1? Anyone have a study or know where I can find it on the www? thanks (inquiring minds want to know) Kel

Answered by a doctor

I'm a long distance runner (about 50mpw), 19 years old, 5'1", and weigh 92lbs. I'm hoping to gain a few pounds because I look a bit too thin. I'm mostly muscle and have a high metabolism. I eat around 1800-2500 calories a day. How much should I be eating to gain? I'm also vegan!
