My cousin was just told that she has C-DIF. We thought the symptoms were from GVHD (Graft versus Host Disease). What does the acronym C-DIF stand for? What causes C-DIF? How long does it last? How is it treated? Could my cousin have both D-DIF and GVHD?

Clostridium difficile or C-Dif is a species of bacteria of the genus Clostridium which are gram-positive, anaerobic spore-forming rods. They cause pseudomembranous colitis, a severe infection of the colon, often after normal gut flora is eradicated by the use of antibiotics. Treatment is by stopping putative antibiotics and commencing specific anticlostridial antibiotics, e.g. metronidazole.
