I got a cortizone shot a week ago in my lower back for degenerative arthritis pain and today I started bleeding. I am 63 and in menopause for at least 10 years! The first day I got the shot I could have eaten everything in the fridge! The shot took away the pain and I am hoping the bleeding stops but it is light so not too uncomfortable. I see my doctor tomorrow and will definitely let him know. So happy I found this blog so that I know it is not a freak thing.

So glad you posted. I'm 52 on HRT in menopause (taking estrogen patch and progestrone pills as my HRT). Recieved a steriod shot in my shoulder last week (have frozen shoulder due an injury breaking my humerus bone in October). Became very bloated the last few days and began bleeding vaginally today. Really hoping this bleeding stops. This same thing has happened to me in the past (prior to menopause) when I've recieved steriod injections. One prior bleeding episode was so bad following a steriod shot, I lost half my blood volume and ended up in the hospital almost had a hysterectomy because of it. Spent the next 6 months on high dose estrogen (2 Ovaral per day) to keep the bleeding controlled. Both eposides resolved with time, perhaps when the effects of the shots wore off. I've read the steriods can mess up the pituitary/adrenal axis (whatever that means). Why it happens to some and not others, I guess just the way we each regulate our hormones. I hope my bleeding stops (yours too), cause I really don't want to go through this again and have never been through this while on HRT. The other steriod shot/vaginal bleeding episodes happened before menopause. Not sure how they will handle this one if the bleeding gets bad. Please post up/share what your doctor says or how he/she plans to treat you.

I am 25 years post menopause and 2 weeks since the injections. My reaction to the bleeding at first was surprise. Now I find it hilarious. The cortizone shots are going to make me young again. If the vaginal bleeding and the hot flashes are the worst these shots will do to me, I will gladly take that over the pain. I got a cortisone shot at the L4/L5 facet joints. My pain has gone down from a 9 to a 1 or 2 in that area.

SO GLAD someone else is having the same problem!!! Not that it's a good thing, but that I am not gonna die!!! Had the same shots in the knees (both knees). Been in menapause for 8+ years now. Had vaginal bleeding that lasted for 10 days. I asked the doctor (OB/GYN) if that was the cause and she said probably not. I also asked my family doctor (who referred me to the OB/GYN) and she said "probably not". Well, guess what! I'm not alone!

I was diagnosed with BURSITIS in both hips and have had horrific pain for over 10 years. None of the doctors knew why I had leg pain. Then a blessing, went to a new doctor and he diagnosed me with BURSITIS. I then have received 3 sets of cortisone injections over the past 9 months and have been bleeding on and off since my injections. Even a 37 day period and a 59 day period. With constants spotting. I will have a 10 day period stop then start again I a week. In fact went to Gump for bleeding. Discovered 3 polyps in uterus. Had surgery 1 m7onth ago to remove them thinking that was the culprit. Now I am having my 2nd period since my surgery. Now I know after doing much online work it is the injections causing g the bleeding. Nit honestly would take the bleeding over the pain any day as my pain was totally debilitating. Are you still receiving injections and bleeding?

Zoeycat -- can you tell me how long you bled and how heavily. I have same situation and really concerned about the heavy bleeding which does not seem to be abating and has been 10 days.

It's been eight days since my cortisone hip injection and I have experienced vaginal bleeding. I am 38 yrs old and I have never, ever had an irregular period or spotting, so I believe there is definitely a correlation. I will be calling my doctors later today to advise them of the change I'm experiencing (sports med. physician who performed the injection and my ob/gyn) and see if they had patients in the past who have had similar complaints.

I had my first cortisone injections on 5/5/14, one in each knee and one in each wrist. Today, 5/22/14, I was shocked to discover that I have vaginal bleeding. I am 64 years old and had my last period 14 years ago. The orthopedic doctor also prescrible Etodolac for inflammationand pain (400 mg. 2 times a day). Although I plan to see a gynecologist tomorrow, I feel somewhat relieved. Although I thought the NSAID might cause bleeding, I was surprised to discover that other people have had this problem after the cortisone injections. Since I had injections in 4 joints, I hope this is my problem. The cortisone injections were like miracles for my knees andd wrists.

I am 62 and have been without periods for 12 years. I started bleeding and cramping 3 days ago and called my gyno right away, I have an appt. tomorrow. But after finding this web site I am sure it is because of the injection I had 7 days ago in my foot. Who would have thought it would cause this problem. I was going crazy thinking I had some horrific cancer. I can't wait to get to my gyno tomorrow and see if she has ever heard of this side effect. I am convinced that is the cause of my period. Thank you for the posts

Hello,
I am going through the same exact thing right now. Wondering if and when did your periods go back to normal? I am extremely nervous as its been 3 months since the shot and I am still having irregular bleeding. Thank you!

Mine lasted 7 days, just like a normal period. It's been 3 weeks so i am waiting to see if it happens again. I went to my gyno and she was certain the shot caused the problem. She said she has seen it happen often. She said her first question to people who come in with irregular bleeding like this is , Have you had a cortizone shot recently? I still have to go through all the tests anyhow just to be certain. Blood work , Ultra sound & biopsy. I had my ultra sound yesterday and the biopsy is next week. I also went to my family doc.because I also came down with shingles the same week. I did research and it's a good possibility the cortizone triggered that. My family doc. was certain that was not the cause for either issue. He had never heard of it. I need my GYNO to call him.LOL
