Again I say, most of them don't know about this side effect. TELL THEM! Your doctor is probably a fine surgeon; don't hold this against him. They need to let the drug companies hear about this, it's happening to too many women.

Thank you all so much!!  I thought I was going crazy.  I see my doctor tomorrow.  Not only have I had the vaginal bleeding (which freaked me out since like so many others I'm extremely regular, and this has been going almost 2 weeks) but I've been getting nose bleeds, too.  I'm going to show him this page tomorrow.  I can't say thank you enough!!

I had corizone injection beginning of jan for my lower back and i,ve been bleeding ever since.  Its driving me crazy as i never have trouble with my periods.  The injection was the worst thing i,ve ever done as its caused me more pain since having it.  I now have a burning pain constant in my left buttock which wasnt there before plus i,ve had facial flushing which doesnt seem to be shifting.  I wish i was warned about the bleeding before i had injection as i dont think i would of had it done.  Think i will just cope with the pain in my back as never having another one.

I had an injection of Kenolog and started on oral prednisone 60/40/20 for a bug bite reaction last May and began spotting a week later after being 25 years post menopausal. I have been experiencing a light period monthly since then and deduced it was from the shot .............. how much longer will it last????? Very irritating to start menstruating after so many years but so reassuring to find this web site. Obviously when I go back for my physical in May, I will run it by my physician. I only wish someone had warned me ...... I certainly would have refused the shot at least but the only thing the ER nurse said was that it was a "powerful" steroid.

I had a cortizone shot 2 weeks ago. 2 days ago I started bleeding heavy, scared me, as I am 62. I went to my Doctor yesterday, she set up a biopsy for today. I went to obgyn, told her about the injection. She said the bleeding was from the shot. Iwent ahead with the biopsy to be safe. She ordered an ultra sound. But after reading all these posts, I think I will cancell that. thanks for your input very helpful

I am 52 and have been post menopausal for 4 years. I am on HRT. I had two cortisone injections for a herniated disc (I was in so much pain I could not walk - the first one didn't help very much but the second one helped a lot). 3 weeks after the second shot, I started a light period. I have had cramps, feeling bloated, moody and emotional, and on-and-off pain in my lower right abdomen near my hip and close to my thigh.

My gyno did an endometrial biopsy and a vaginal ultrasound to rule out cancer. I will get the results next week and am scared to death. This cramping and bleeding is freaking me out, since those are signs of uterine cancer.

I printed out the pages of these posts and brought them to my primary care doctor. He had never heard of this side effect. However, as soon as I told my gyno that I had cortisone shots, her head snapped up and she immediately said, "Those steroids can do a number on your hormones, and that can definitely be the cause of the bleeding."

I am happy she did the biopsy and the vaginal ultrasound as quite frankly I couldn't rest at night with the possibility of cancer. I am praying that I get the "all clear" next week, but I'm a nervous wreck. Thank you to everyone who has posted here. This site is a godsend to women who are frightened, just hearing so many similar stories. Thank you to all my sisters out there! And BTW, the neither the orthopedic surgeon who ordered the shot nor the doctor who gave me the shots ever once mentioned this could be a side effect. Honestly, when I first saw that blood it scared the you know what out of me!

OK, I am now 55, had a cortisone shot about a year or so ago, remember the bleeding...but not, they have just discovered a thickening in my uterine wall and have a DNC scheduled for Friday. If I were you, don't cancel the ultra sound which is what found my thickening (don't know what it is yet) I would rather have been tested and feel better about knowing you are healthy. Wish I would have investigated more.

I am so glad to have found this site. I had a Kenalog cortisone injection in my shoulder 3 weeks ago and started spotting 2 weeks later. Four years ago the same thing happened , but I did not make the connection at that time. I would not have had the injection this time if I had. This time the spotting seems a bit heavier(well, I am 4 years older) and I have now been past menopause for 18 years. I do not want to go through all the tests, but I suppose if the bleeding does not stop completely within a week or two, I will have to do something. I am also seeing an acupuncture physician and I hope he can help with the shoulder and the bleeding. I would love to hear how long this spotting lasted in others. Thanks again for all the posts that have helped ease the fear factor!

According to my experience and others, it can last for several weeks, and it can also start and stop and start again. Unpredictable. If you must ease your mind, have an ultra sound, but not a biopsy. They love to give you those expensive tests!

Hello. I had three shots in my neck and one in my back a few weeks ago. I noticed a few days ago this black discharge. I should have my period until the 11th. I Douched today thinking that might help but I'm still bleeding. I was starting to really freak out. My grandma passed away with Cervical cancer so yea... Should I see a doctor or wait and see?

Hi Patty, yes I can also relate to the stopping and starting. I had cortisone in my shoulder last year in Nov and Dec then again in Jan. I am 53yrs old. 14 days after the first one I had a bleed and was totally in shock as I had not bled for over 3 years. I also have the hormone patch. To be on the safe side the doc sent me for an ultrasound which was fine and said no further tests were needed as 'this can happen'. She also said the hormone patch would give me a 'rush of hormones' combined with the cortisone. I hope the on and off bleeding subsides soon although to be honest it is getting less each time but never fails to freak me out. I WILL NEVER have another cortisone injection. I am being told cortisone can stay in your body for quite a few months. :-( I will check on here for further posts as it does help reading them :-)

In 2009 I had 2 cortizone shots in my lumbar area, for degenerative disc disease with bulging disc, nerve root compression, etc.  Exactly 2 weeks after the first injection, I started to bleed and it lasted 6 weeks and it was horrible! I was in ER at one point due to how heavy it was.  After that I had a follow up with my ob/gyn. She did a DNC and found out I had uterine polyps &  adenomyosis, both which can cause heave bleeding.  I assumed that my bleeding problems were from those conditions.  Three months later, I decided to have another cortizone injection prior to a vacation to help my back (the 1st injection gave me some relief - for about 2 months).  Prior to the procedure, the doctor said "I see you had some bleeding after first injection..." and I told him that I had found out about my problems after the dnc & that I was sure that was the cause. He stated that the shot I had, could have caused that reaction.  I went ahead with the injection because I was SURE that they weren't related.  Exactly 2 weeks later, I started to bleed again.  It was as bad this time, due to my ob/gyn having done a partial ablation.  It lasted another 6 weeks.  2 weeks ago, I went to an orthopedic surgeon due to hyperextending my knee & an MRI showing a torn meniscus, etc.  The surgeon wanted me to have an cortizone injection & not surgery.  I told her my past history with the steroid & the side effects. She said she had NEVER heard of that - ever.  I was in pain and willing to take a chance that it wouldn't happen again.  IT DID. Once again, exactly 2 weeks later I began to bleed again.  We'll see how long it lasts this time.  Very disappointing.  Won't ever have a shot again.  How do these doctors not know this???  Anyway - that is my story.  Thanks for letting me share it! :-)

My daughter had cortizone shots in her shoulder and she ended up having to have 2 units of blood from excessive bleeding.  She is still having her period.
