Everybody is aware of the importance of the folic acid in birth defects prevention and their consumptions by pregnant women. New studies are trying to prove folic acid’s benefits in cancer prevention.
Folic acid is a form of folate, which is a water-solubla vitamin B and the most deficient vitamin in the U.S. population. It is found excessively in fresh fruits and vegetables.

This vitamin has been found to prevent lung cancer in smokers who had high folate intake than those who had low or any folate intake.
Italian researchers put their efforts in demostarting the benefits of folic acid in preventing cancer in patients with laryngeal leukoplakia, a precancerous lesion in the throat.

In the trial they conducted, 43 patients who were not treated for pre-cancerous lesions in their throats were given five milligrams of folic acid three times a day for six months. Six months after the study started, 12 patients were completely cured, 19 had their lesions half the size or less than at the beginning and 12 patients had no change.

Analyzing data from the study, researchers concluded that folic acids supplements could be beneficial in preventing cancer in patients with pre-cancerous lesions of the larynx used alone or in combination with other cancer-preventing drugs.
