Please, can you tell me does folic acid decrease side effects in patients taking methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis? If it does how well does folic acid decrease the side effects of methotrexate? Thanks!

There are studies done with people with rheumatoid arthritis. People taking either folic acid were compared to people taking fake pills for 2 - 12 months, and everyone took methotrexate (less than 20mg per week) at the same time. The studies also tested whether folic acid decreases the benefits of methotrexate. So, both low and high doses of folic acid may decrease stomach upset and other side effects of methotrexate more than fake pills. Side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation, bloating and stomach cramps.
