The worst danger with oxycodone (which is the active ingedient in Oxycontin or "Oxycotton" as you so gracefully put it) is overdose by taking too much of it. If too much oxycodone is taken, it will cause respitory depression and decrease the functionality of the CNS---essentially her heart and breathing will slow down and stop. Im assuming that your mom must have already been on some type of painkiller previous to this because they usually don't give pure Oxycodone to patients unless they are tolerant to opiods already due to the danger of overdose.

Saying that, one of the worst long term effects is that she will build a tolerance to them and have to take more to get the same effect. If she has legitimate pain and is taking them as prescribed, she should be ok....as long as the doctor doesn't suddenly stop her prescription...she needs to be slowly weened off of them or she could suffer withdrawls. How many mg's are the pills? if they are some of the higher doses such as 60mg pills or 80mg pills, she will most definatly form a tolerence and physical dependence.

Other not so serious side effects include: constipation, euphoria, dry mouth, dizzyness, increased speech, inability to sleep, vomiting, sweating, cold chills, sweating, clammy skin. If too much of the drug is taken you may notice she is really lethargic, keeps nodding off, pupils will be dilated, she will probably be sweating, her breathing will slow down, etc. If you suspect overdose, it is important to keep the person awake and seek medical attention very quickly. If medical attention is not available you can try to induce vomiting, try forcing the person to drink water, and try and keep them moving or get them to try and perform some small physical activity to increase the heart rate and breathing. Most importantly get them to a doctor or hospital so they can be given Narcan...a drug that counteracts most opiates by knocking the opiate from the receptors in the brain. This is a very painful experience often putting the patient into severe withdrawl immediately (ive seen kids in the ER projectile vomit, soil their pants, cry in agony)--- but it saves lives.
