My blood test showed extremely high level of cholesterol and I’m about to begin my cholesterol lowering drug statin therapy. I would like to learn something about the possible side effects these drugs can cause. I’ve heard that they can be very serious and even seriously disrupt your daily routine. My doctor still has to decide between Crestor and Lipitor.

The truth is that cholesterol therapy cannot be imagined without statins. They are very good at improving LDL and HDL cholesterol ratio (they increase the level of good HDL cholesterol and reduce the level of bad LDL cholesterol). However, it is also true that they produce very disturbing side effects, especially after long use. Some of the commonest are headaches, vomiting and/or nausea, rash, vision problems, changes in urine, allergic reaction (closed throat, swollen lips, tongue or whole face), constipation... The list is far from complete, but those most disturbing side effects are usually associated with muscles and nerves. Certain researches prove that statins cause dangerous neuromuscular disorders that manifest in muscle pain, tiredness and fatigue and later, after prolonged use of the drugs, even in inability to talk, write, walk or perform other simple actions and in memory gaps. As you can see, this list of side effects is really frightening, but you can’t cope with high cholesterol without statins. Some experts argue that statins destroy too much cholesterol and thus destroy the ability of cells to perform their function. This, in their opinion, is the main cause of muscle - related difficulties and they suggest vitamin C as the principal way to fight cholesterol. Apart from statins, the important role is that of particularly designed diet - low - fat and low - cholesterol diet.

Statin side effects have been the subject of much controversy over the past few decades, for this reason, many people seek natural cholesterol lowering alternatives to avoid statin side effects. Common side effects that people experiencing are headaches, nausea and fever, other statin side effects can be much more serious. Statin medications are prescription drugs that lower LDL cholesterol levels. These drugs work by blocking the enzyme that your liver needs to produce cholesterol. Although statins have no effect on HDL cholesterol, they do succeed in lowering your LDL cholesterol. Anyhow, statins side effects can be very serious, and doctors should be more cautious when prescribing them for their patients.
