Hi Maureen! This should have nothing to do with each other, so I would like you to phone your doctor or better yet gynecologist, and have a check up! Bleeding YEARS after menopause does happen, but I would want you to get checked out anyway! Have you had any pain in your pelvic area, or smelly urine?

Maureen,

The person who told you uterine bleeding is not related to a cortisone shot is wrong because it happened to me. I think this is happening to lots of women and this is not being reported. I am 50 years old and went a got a cortisone shot in my left shoulder during my period. I don't have periods that are irregular and periods that don't stop. This period lasted 22 days and of course I was panicking after 15 days into it. I found out through research that a rare side effect of a cortisone shot is pancreatitis, anaphylactic shock and uterine bleeding. My GYN did help me and had to put me on birth control to get the bleeding to stop. It worked. She put me on Seasonique, 3 pills a day for 3 days, 2 pills a day for three days, then one pill a day which I am still on it my doctor wants me to stay on it for a while. That was so scary. My MALE orthopedic doctor did not know how to address the issue when I called the office to address it. I haven't been on birth control since I was in my 40's and I am far from being in menopause because I have had recent blood work to test that. Yes this was a rare side effect but I am wondering how rare it is since it seems to me woman's health is not studied enough.

Hello Maureen and Kking....

Just thought I would let you both know that I had a cortisone shot in my lower back about a month and a half ago and have had spotting between periods as well.. apparently after doing extensive hours of research and reading what a ton of other woman had to say on forums such as this one I have see many many MANY woman have this same issue. It does not seem to be a side effect that drs tell you about or even have much literature on but if you search hard enough it is out there and doesnt seem to concerning as long as its not a heavy bleed regularly. I see my pain management Dr on tuesday and I will address this with him to see if he has any insight on this. How did everything turn out for you ladies? Very curious! Im due to have another injection but if this is going to happen on a regular basis Im not sure that I will. Im only 31. Having my period everyday is not going to be acceptable to me and to be honest my fiance... lol... let me know how things went. Thanks

I am 62 years old have had 3 cortisone shots in my knees over the past year each time I've had vaginal bleeding which lasted about a week each time. The bleeding would start 10 days to 2 weeks after the shot. my Dr. never suggested that it could be the shot. I just recently figured it out on my own by going back and looking at my records of each time I had a shot and each time I had bleeding and bingo there it was. I paid for some very costly test because they thought it was something else. why aren't Dr.'s up on this they seem to be the only ones in the dark.it just goes to show you that you have to be in charge of your own body. I will never have another one. I am so happy to have found this site. Marilyn

Maureen, I am 68 and 29 years post menopausal. Nine days after receiving a cortisone injection in right shoulder joint I developed severe cramping with minor menstrual bleeding. Was terrified of cancer until I read that many many woman have this problem. Still going on after 10 days.. Also have tremendous headaches since shot. I only wish I knew how long it will last. Had to tell my druggist that the feminine products were for the grandchildren. How embarrassing lol. Hope you fare well with this.....Sheila

Hi....It has been a couple of years since I originally posted.I had to get a uterine scraping from a gyno ,since all DR'S said it was impossible for the shots to be related to the start of my periods again...so there was a strong possibility it was cancer....HA!!! I am still mad that so called experts would not listen to anecdotal evidence. The tests came back negative for cancer,as I knew they would. I have really bad osteoarthritis in my knees now (many years of being a flight attendant ) and guess what they want to give me....cortisone shots! My response has not been nice.!!!

I had a cortisone shot in my knee on Thursday and had a series of blood tests done Friday. The tests showed that my white blood cell count was 21.5 (suppose to be less than 10.5) and my glucose level was 6.4 (6.5 is considered diabetic). Then 6 days later I started my period 12 days early. I completely panicked and made 3 other appointments. My appts were 16 days after my cortisone shot. I got lots and lots of tests done. All my numbers that were considered high or in an abnormal range all were back to being normal. I'm only 38...that injection was my first and last cortisone shot.

I am 68 years old and about 20 years past menopause. I got a Cortizone injection 10 days ago and started cramping and light bleeding over the weekend. I hope that they do research this issue.
