Thanks to everyone for the information. My body has been through alot in the last month and was not sure why my breasts and nipples were tender. I went of the depo shot in November becasue I was having my tubes tied the following month. Earlier this month I had to have surgery for a ovarian cyst. Doc ended up removing right ovary and tube. Then tied left tube.
For anyone who has gone off the shot and can not handle the heavy periods you may want to talk to your doc about having a procedure called an endometrial ablation done. They go in and burn the inside lining of your uterus. You will (should) not have any more periods. But please know you can not get pregnant.

i am so glad i found this page, i was due 2 weeks ago for another shot, and i'm ready to go out and buy a pregnancy test because my breasts are so tender, i'm cramping (no period), and i'm nauseous. my doctor did NOT tell me any of the side effects, i have had many yeast infections, and he says its due to my body chemistry changing? thanks for letting me know, doc! But i can't wait for my period to start.

I only took the shot twice and although my first period was 3 weeks long, it was mainly spotting. But the second period was so heavy and so many blood clots that I did go in to see my gynacologist. He said it was normal and to keep taking the shot. Thankfully I didn't. My last shot was in July and now in January, I still haven't had a period and was beginning to think I was pregnant too! I have so many symptoms! I have tender breasts and nipples, indigestion, bloating, headaches, and am starting to feel nauseous. What confuses me is that I've also started to have bleeding gums and lost the taste for coffee-and I love my coffee!!! Two home pregnancy tests have failed and I'm not sure if its worth taking a pregnancy test at the doctors as I now feel its all to do with Depo withdrawal. I never would have taken it had I known and its very sad to see that so many women feel the same way.

Oh and I gained over 10 lbs very quickly after starting the shot and have not been able to lose any of it...it just seems to have gone to my belly now!

I, too, am so glad that I found this site! I was due for my injection Dec 21, but my husband and I would like to get pregnant in the next year, so I didn't get it. My dr put me on yasmin to help regulate a cycle. Of course, I haven't had one yet, but I am so freakin nausiated. I throw up several times a day and even wake up at night just to throw up. UGH! I have indigestion, bloating, etc and I never have those symptoms. I was on the shot for 7 1/2 years and I loved it the whole time - never had a bad symptom. Now I'm not so happy. Thanks for this website, and all of you that have written. I feel like I'm not alone and I have more insight now.

wow im sooooo glad i found this site its more helpful than any doctor ive ever talked to or any informational site! i started depo in october of 2004 and was on it for a year. i loved it! i had no periods and i felt wonderful. then i got off it for 6 months because i went to australia and i didnt want to deal with having to find health departments there. i didnt get on any other birth control either. my period never came back in this time. then in may of 2006, i took a morning after pill after an unexpected night which made my period start. i wasnt sure if it was directly because of the pill or my period was actually coming back, but i was happy to have it anyway! i was starting to feel like i wasnt a woman anymore!

well then i went to the gyn for my annual, and he was shocked to hear i wasnt on any birth control even tho i wasnt really having sex, so he practically forced me back on depo. so the periods again disappeared. then in october of the same year (2006), i saw another gyn and she told me that i had already been on depo too long (they supposedly dont recommend more than 2 yrs but my other gyn didnt mention this!!) and she put me on the nuva ring. i was on the nuva ring until march 2007 and my period never came back.

in march of 2007 i got off birth control altogether because i was tired of having these fake hormones in me messing with my body. i started having wierd symptoms like some of you have mentioned in june and july, thinking i may be pregnant. i felt sick, i had horrible headaches almost everyday, i felt tired...but eventually these went away around september. FINALLLLLLLLLLLY in december 2007, december 19 to be exact, i started my period!!! it was a day to celebrate, i finally felt normal again! wellllllllll i shouldnt have been happy so soon. its now january 14, 2007, and i just got off my period for the THIRD time since dec 19. the third time!! well im really hoping that this is just my body gettin used to having a period again after so long, but i hope this stops soon. has anyone had a similar pattern with their period when they started it again, and if so how long did it last? thanx for all ur help and posts!!

Hey! The first time I received the depo shot was apr of 99 right after the birth of my second child. I thought it was the best thing going as it took that monthly friend away. In dec 2005 my husband and I decided we would like to try for another, so I decided not to get that shot that month. Was told it would take 6months to ayear before I would get pregnant. Well needless to say I was pregnant 6 months later, june 2006. We had our daughter in mar 2007 and I was all over getting my depo shot as soon as I could. So in I went in Apr 2007 and got it, got the next one in July 2007, but had some break through bleeding. So doctor figured I needed to come off for a bit to allow myself to menstrate properly, since they are suppose to wait till after you have your period before putting one back on birth control after having a baby. So I agree'd, even with the odd's of getting pregnant again. Well I was due for that shot in sept 07. Did 2 weeks of spotting in Nov 07, a week of spotting in Dec 07 and now have had my period for 11 days and it just seems to be getting worse as each day goes by. Talked to doc today and pretty much got told to grin and bare it.

Hi i'm new. I'm hope to get some answers about some wierd symptoms I've had since I've discontinued the shot. I was on it since oct 2000 and had my last shot in june of 2007. I took it faithfully. My husband and I are ttc so I didn't go back in sept for the shot. Since I've come off it I've had no period or spotting. But I've noticed my breasts were sensitive, especially my nipples. That lasted about 2 weeks and now they are not as sensitive anymore. I've taken a few HP tests but they were neg. My last test being around christmas. I'll take another in a couple weeks. Anyways my husband and I have noticed a huge difference in myself. Before I had no sex drive and horrible mood swings like I was bipolar or something. Seems like the depression I had before isn't as bad anymore. I hoping all these good signs are indicators that my body is getting back to normal. If anyone has any suggestions or similar experiences I would like to hear them. My doctor never said anything about side effects so I kind of feel like I'm going crazy.

I was on depo for three and a half years up to November of 2007. I have been off for two months. I have breast swelling and pain, and I am experiencing nausea daily. It feels like I am pregnant. I had a period in January for 7 days then off for 7 days then on for 5 days then off again. I am hoping to get pregnant again soon. I have had no problems when I went off with my first two children nor did I have these symptoms before with either of them, but I was also only on it for up to 3 yrs. It has been interesting.

I was on Depo for four and a half years and had my last shot in Sept. I have not yet gotten my period but am definitely experiencing the extremely painful breasts and nipples. My question is about the weight. I gained about 25 pounds over the time of being on the shot. Can anyone who has been through this tell me if the weight came off after going off teh shot. Thanks for your help - its so comforting to hear it from people going through the same thing.

Hi,I had my last depo in July last year and I had my routine smear today. Told the nurse about my extremely sore nipples, weight gain and the 'feeling' of being pregnant and she said that it is not a side affect and asked if I had done a pregnancy test??? I have done 2 in the last few weeks and both negative!
How can all the responses on here about side affects be false???? Was she talking rubbish?
