Hammertoe surgery recovery, do I need to sleep in the shoe at night?

I failed to ask my surgeon this question and I have a friend who said he had to wear the boot 24/7 after hammer toe surgery meaning he slept in it at night.  I have a shoe instead of a boot.  Do I need to sleep in the shoe at night?  Thanks so much for answering.
