Callouses - how to not get them?

My wife has been to the gym to lift on a very regular basis for the last few months, but has started to develop callouses. She got a pair of gloves a few weeks ago, but she said that they aren't helping. Are there any other tricks to avoiding this problem?

How to lift weight for body shape not strength?
