I’m interested in reasons for withdrawal some anti inflammatory drugs from the market. I mean, anti inflammatory drugs are widely used and how could such mistake happen in pharmaceutical industry? What exactly were these drugs, and how long were they available at the pharmacies? Please post. Thanks.

Withdrawal of vioxx was in September 2004, at that time it was one of the most widely used drugs in the world. Vioxx is generically rofecoxib and belongs to cox-2 inhibitors, subclass of anti-inflammatory drugs. Last year, bextra was suspended from the market, also belongs to coxibs. Non- selective cox inhibitors are aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, that’s why they have side effects on gastric mucosa and cause stomach upset. These selective inhibitors were designed to block only cox-2 enzyme that is responsible for inflammation and to be easier on the stomach. Reason for withdrawal vioxx from market is the one that it was shown to cause increased risk for stroke and heart attacks if used longer than 18 months. Valdecoxib was withdrawn from market too. And there is also one nsaid that doesn’t belong to coxibs but was withdrawn because of its hepatotoxicity, it is called benoxaprofen. Hope that helped.
