So I'm someone who masturbates a lot (don't judge me), and I'm worried because a friend recently told me that too much stroking causes scar tissue on the penis, which he said can have a bad effect. Is he right about this?

Your friend does have a point. For one, continual rubbing, especially without a lube, can cause keratinization of the skin. What this means is that the skin responds to the friction by developing a thicker, protective layer of tissue. This is not scarring per se, but it can cause problems with sensitivity. You can usually reverse this effect by laying off the wanking for a while and using a good moisturizer - a penis health creme with vitamin C (needed for healthy new skin) can do the trick.
Also, if you are really aggressive with your technique, bending and twisting of the shaft can lead to scarring of the connective tissue that surrounds the erectile chambers. Over time, this may cause the penis to bend unnaturally during erections. In most cases, this is no big deal, but rarely the bend becomes pronounced enough that it is painful or inhibits penetration with a partner. Usually, surgery is needed to correct this issue.
