My son needs to take chloramphenicol because he has certain bacterian infection. I heard that chloramphenicol can make a lot of damages and that it should not be used if safer medications can be used. Does anybody know is it a truth? What are the side effects of chloramphenicol? Thanks!

Yes, unfortunately, chloramphenicol has very much side effect and some of them can be very dangerous. The most serious side effect of chloramphenicol treatment is aplastic anaemia. It’s really rare but it’s generally fatal. The common effect is bone marrow suppression but it’s reversible once the drug is stopped. Nausea, diarrhea and appetite loss are relatively common side effects of this medication.
