Hello. My friend is recommended to take chloramphenicol. He is hospitalized and has meningitis caused by pneumococci. However, I have heard that this medication can show some severe allergic reactions. I would like to hear something more about this. I would appreciate very much if someone could answer me this. Thanks.

Chloramphenicol is no more used as a systemic antibiotic. It can have a serious influence on bone marrow. To be more precise, it causes its depression. There are two types of bone marrow depression. One is dose related and it is reversible. Other is irreversible idiosyncratic form of aplastic anemia. These conditions are serious. That is why chloramphenicol is nowadays more used as topical medication. You should consult with a doctor before using it. Bye!
