I had 2 cortisone shots in my high hamstrings on Nov 3 2010. Started bleeding on Nov 19th. Now 45 days later, still bleeding and still no sign of it lightening up. Still bright red every day. I'm sick of this. (BTW, I'm 43 and my cycles were typically 34 days long.) Has anyone else bled for this long???? I've left a message for my GP today as I am now starting to worry.

:-D So Very Thankful for finding this...After 3 epidural steroid injections and 8 years post menopausal. I started bleeding vaginally yesterday.....I have been in so much pain the last year and emotions running very high...and really hoping these shots start working and then to have this happen....I was really thinking the worst until reading all your comments. Just hope it don't last too long.

I'm a 41year old active female in good health who is looking at hip and/or knee replacements in the future due to congenitally dislocated hips and resulting shallow hip sockets. I'm having the same problem after an injection of two vials of cortisone in to my hip. Years ago I bled for a month straight after a shot in the arm for a rash (Kenalog) but I stupidly didn't connect that cortisone shot to the cortisone that was to be put into my hip. :-( That time I had a gamut of tests done (trans vag ultrasound, bloodwork, etc.) and my gyn concluded the shot was to blame after ruling out any physical abnormality. Now I am having periods 14-16 days apart, and spotting in between. The worst part is the swelling -breast and fingers is where I notice it most. My bras do not fit well, and I'm feeling constantly pre-menstrual. I, too, will avoid these injections in the future. I would opt for pain medication before undergoing an injection once again.

I am so glad I found this because everyone thinks I am being paranoid. I had cortizone shots in both knees last september and started bleeding about 5 days later and didnt stop for three months. I asked my gyn doctor and he didnt think it had anything to do with with it, but after reading these posts I am positive it did.

I am also very glad I found this page! I have not had a period for over 3 years...had 3 cortisone shots in my shoulder (1 every few days) within 10 days of the last shot I started a period...cramps the lot! and quite heavy too. Why do Doctors deny that Cortisone can heave this effect on us unsuspecting women? it´s quite frightening when it happens to us for no apparent reason. :-(

Yes, I have had vaginal bleending for three weeks now after a steroid nerve root injection. It started two weeks post injection. I am ten years menopausal. I've had an ultrasound and biopsy to rule out endometrial cancer. Still waiting for results but don't expect bad news. I also have had depression. Crying and crying for no reason. Mood swings which are a common side effect. Also the steroid flush on my chest. Looks like a severe sunburn. The good news is that my leg pain is mostly gone.

I am so glad to have found this site.  I am post menapause  6 years ago and started bleeding 5 days ago.  I had a series of injections which ended 4/15.  I was so afraid that there was something else wrong.  I am experiencing facial hairs, face bloated, cramping just like a menstrual cycle. I will call my OBGYN for assistance.

I had one injection in my lower back and I had no pain for a week and no side effects, then it came back so th doc gave me two more injections in my sacrum joints. One week later I developed a headache that lasted two weeks, I also had really bad insomnia, my period was five days late which convinced me that I was pregnant since we have been trying for two years and that an irregular period was so out of the norm for me... blood work came back and pregnancy test was negative :( It is now day 23 and I'm still bleeding, I really hope it's just from the shots because I'm starting to get concerned. I will be calling the doctor to get some answers!

Boy, was I delighted to find this post.  I have not had a period in 8 (yes, eight) years and 5 days following a cortizone shot I get a period.
I call my doc and he says "yes, this can happen, particularly when a woman is taking hormone replacement (I'm on Bio-identical)".   Cortizone can cause a spike in hormones so if you are on HRT  or your body is already producing estrogen and you are still having a monthly period the injection pushes it over the top. and your period kicks in.
Needless to say, I am still scheduled for a ultra-sound just to be sure.  That's our healthcare at its BEST.  Totally Non-informative!!!!  I likely would have refused the shot had I known this side-effects.  Thank God for the internet.

I had an L5 epidural on December 2, four week later I started getting menstral cramps and spotting:-( .  This turned into a light to medium period for 7 days.  This is abnormal because I've been post-menapausal for about 15 years, I'm 68.  I take HRT.  After stopping for 2 days, it began again, just heavier, stopped again and 4 days later heavy again.  So glad that I've seen these posts, because like others, it scares me.  Now I feel more at ease.  I don't want to tell my GYM because she will just order a bunch of tests that I think are unnessarey.  I'm having another injection in a month, so it looks like this bleeding will go on for sometime. Thanks to everyone who is in the same boat.<3

I've got a heavy bleeding between my periods (my last one after the shot was much heavier than usual), my ortho doc told me yesterday it's 99% related to the shot and about 10% of the women injected develop the same symptoms. Told me to wait and not rush into investigating any further for  a couple of months.

Some useful info here:

I'm 65 and have been on hormone replacement for a number of years. Occasionlly I have a little spotting, but after receiving a cortisone shot in my hip 5 days ago, I suddenly started having cramps and abnormal bleeding. I immediately thought about the cortisone, because I also had the unpleasant side effect of an extremely flushed, hot face for over two days. The regular list of side effects does not mention the bleeding, and then I searched further and found this post. I actually feel better now; I just hope it stops soon!

I'm SO glad I found this, I haven't really seen any other articles mention vaginal bleeding as a side effect of corticosteroids. I received my shot last week on monday for a rash called patyriasis(sp) rosea & tuesday, when I finally rolled out of bed to go use the bathroom I saw blood. I freaked for a moment forgetting all about the shot & thought miscarriage, but I was pretty sure I wasn't pregnant seeing as how I just went off my period just over a week ago, 2 days before the doctors visit to be precise. Although I was pretty sure I wasn't pregnant, it just ran through my mind cause while I was lying in bed I felt a little crampy & then I finally saw the blood & these are the only symptoms I know for miscarriage. It would have been nice if they tell you there MAY be a chance at bleeding instead of you finding out on your own. It hasn't been 24hrs yet but I'm still bleeding & cramping, this sucks :(

I am 17 years post-menopausal. I had a shot in my hip. I expected the face flush, but not the insomnia and mostly not the vaginal bleeding. I panicked and went to the GYN. She said it probably was the shot, but we had to be sure. Now I have had the ultra sound and am waiting for results. I am going to tell the orthopedist about the side effects -he didn't tell me about any side effects. Good luck.
