My daughter is bipolar. She has been increasing her lamictal and she seems very "drugged". I am concerned. Her doctor wants her on 200mg, two times daily. along with Prozac. A specific time of the month, she seems to be rapid cycling. She also seems to be having a loss of memory, more short than long. Is this normal?
Thank you for any help you can give.

Hello there! As you already know drugs’ influence on people is individual and some people react well and feel better on the lamictal/prozac combo while others experience hypo/mania, or panic attacks or severe anxiety and report that if there are signs of hypomania, and if they cycle wide, they just crash harder. They say it is because of prozac.
Doctors seem to prescribe this combo as it has been shown to work well together without any problem interactions.
200mg dosage is a standard effective dosage for bipolar, but plenty of people do feel a difference when taking more, and often do have to go up to 400mg a day.
As for the memory loss, it is thought that lamictal can cause concentration problems, so this may be where the short term memory loss is coming from but memory loss is a problem of this disorder itself.
About all the stuff you need to talk to her doctor and watch for her reaction and the effect specific drugs have on her. Also, you may ask for other doctors’ opinions. That may be a good thing to do.

I am up to 450 mg/ day and initially found the side effects to be very unsteady feelings. I fell, tripped and my mind wandered. I'd say I felt pretty drugged. it's been three months and the side effects are gone for the most part, but there are days when my vision is off, I can't sleep, and I have a heavy uncomfortible stomach problem.
I don't like the side effects, but I keep beleiving how worse my BP II would be without anything.
Talk to your Dr. and maybe he can get you on Wellbutrine. That worked great for me until I have a few grand mal seizures. THAT was terrible.
I liked Wellbitrine and felt very stable on it. That was a shame.
It's hunt and peck and terrible feeling bad in transition from one to the other, but hang in there.
