What an interesting movie about Aileen Wuornos, the first woman executed in Florida for serial killing. The movie is very sympathetic towards Wuornos, portraying her as a woman whose life started out bad and only got worse. The only positive aspect of Wuornos's life that is highlighted is her relationship with a woman named Selby. Prostitution is the only way that Wuornos knows to make a living. The first time she kills is when she is brutally raped by a "customer" leaving the viewer to feel that Wuornos was completely justified in her actions. After this, she tries to find a legitimate job but is constantly turned away. Finally after a day of rejections, she is picked up by a cop who takes her away and makes her do things to him. Feeling sorry for Wuornos yet?? Wuornos then returns home to the only love she has ever known, Selby, who complains of being "hungry." To get more money, Wuornos continues to kill her "customers" who she perceives as being bad men. At the end as the police are onto her trail and as Selby is applying pressure, Wuornos kills not only the "bad" men but even a kind man who tries to help her and give her a safe place. As the kind man begs for his life and when Wuornos fires the gun anyway, the viewer can see how how of control she is and some of the sympathy that was felt earlier is lost. It is ironic in the end that the only love Wuornos has known in her life, Selby, testifies against her. Very sad movie with excellent acting by Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci. Definately makes the viewer think.
