In May 2011, I had anxiety attacked and depression, the doctor gave me sertraline 50 mg. At first, for the first 3 days I took 25 mg. and then from day 4 took 50mg thru today. It's been 9 weeks now since I took it and I feel ok. except the twitch and body jerk at nite and my sleep is ok.  I exercised 3-4 times/week take fish oil too. I told the doctor that I want to ween off the medication now but he told me I may have a relapse even if I stay 6 months andf that better to stay at least a year before tapering off.   But I really would like to try to ween the med, now since I only take shorter term and would like to find out if anyone has tried weening off only after 2-3 months or even 4 months, and how long is your withdrawal sympton and how hard was it?

Thank you for reading and hope to hear from you.

First off, 50mg dose of Zoloft is the minimal one that is usually used to achieve positive effects, with keeping in mind that lower the dose is, the less side effects and chances for withdrawal to happen. It takes at least two weeks for sertaline to start having any effects, so since you are on it for nine weeks, you are only now just starting to feel the benefits from it. Don't take me wrong, I was on the same dose, for about the same time, but I've gotten only the worst part of it, insomnia (which was main reason I was put on it) and weird muscle sensations, so I'm not exactly the fan of this medication. But, since you did get the benefit from it and you don't need to tell me how bad it looks being depressed and tortured with anxiety, I would stick with your doctors recommendation, rather than taking matters into your own hands. For how long does your doctor thinks you should be taking it, a year? Has he suggested any alternative such as counseling or therapy alongside medication?

He told me to take it at least a year. also as of now I can take a group therapy since the private therapy offers is in backlog, but I plan of seeing a private therapy on my own too depend on how the group therapy comes along. On top of this, I also read a CBT book.

I'm doing great after I tapered off my med in 8/13/11. For the first 2 months, I was stumbled with my emotions, but the last 3 months, I'm always happy and calm. I also stop my group therapy after few months. Exercise helps a lot as well as mindfulness meditation keeps me calm. These books help me a lot!

- Undoing depression
_Mindfulness, An 8 week plan to exercise peace in a frantic world.
- The Mindful way thru depression, Freeing yourself from chronic unhappiness.

and there are many other books that could really helps too.

I'm glad to find this website that helps me to really think what I need to do to save my life.  I also encourage people to check this website: SPAM.org
