I saw that lansoprazole is available as an over the counter drug now. It seemed a bit weird to me that the FDA would approve something like that, because lansoprazole is used for GERD and ulcers - conditions that need proper medical diagnosis, and not DIY diagnosis at home. All of this makes me wonder what the side effects of lansoprazole could be when not used properly?

I think that stomach pain and diarrhea are the only side effects that lansoprazole can cause. Sure, stomach pain and diarrhea are both very unpleasant, and also, interestingly, not unlike the symptoms of the conditions lansoprazole is supposed to treat. But I don't think those side effects are dangerous. What do you think?
