I have had the same problem after an SI joint injection of steroids. My former doctor told me it shouldn't hurt, but they are so wrong! It is way worse than the original problem and I now have a 2 inch diameter "hole" as I call it in my back that is discolored and extremely painful! I also have had some type of lump near the site as well which is how mine started. It went from a lump to a hole pretty quick, and now I have another lump and can only pray that it does not turn into another hole. I was never told about this side effect either, and you can believe I will never let another doctor inject steroids in me again.

I am experiencing the same thing. It is alarming - if not depressing! I had my cortisone shot in the top right hip/buttocks area in January, The indentation just suddenly developed in September! Like yours, the indentation has been spreading laterally, and I am praying it won't continue spreading. If it does continue, it will spread across my buttocks and thighs, which is terrifying!

I've seen 2 doctors about it: My dermatologist says it is my immune system responding to the injection, and said it may continue. Just a wait and see thing. He said he can inject fatty tissue filters later. Not much comfort, especially since he seemed less knowledgeable about it.

My family doctor looked at it and immediately told me what it was. He gave it a specific name (which I can't recall right now) and says it is scar tissue that has been forming beneath our skin surface and is just now showing. He said that it can happen to people months to even to a year after surgery/injection etc. That it is actually death of the fatty tissue there.

My family doctor said he believes that it may stop at some point, and not to worry overly. He also said that fatty tissue taken from other areas can be used as a filler to fill in the depressions in the skin.

My family doctor said this is why he never gives people shots because if a person reacts to the medication in pill form, you can just stop taking the pill, whereas an injection can't be taken away.

That makes so much sense! I wonder why my dermatologist didn't know this could be a possibility - and why he continues to give injections!

I am more relieved after seeing my general practitioner since he was immediately able to identify what it is and the cause, whereas my dermatologist seemed less familiar with it and wanted to consult with others etc.

Re: the fillers, I'm thinking -couldn't that cause the same response to the injection site? So I am less inclined to go that route.

Luckily, they gave me the injection just below the top of my underwear - so it can be hidden. I am still terrified it will continue -- and just praying it will go no furher!!

Good luck and hang in there! You are not alone!

I have the same reaction in my right buttock where I recieved a steroid shot over 1 month ago. The divot looks like I sat on a baseball and it left an indentation in my right butt cheek. It also looks a little bruised. Not pretty. Can fat injections help this?

I have the same reaction, months later. Now I have a huge ugly dent in my shoulder. No told me about any side effects either. Should never have gotten it. Did not even help me. Think it's actually doing more damage.

I had a steroid shot injected at the right side of buttock about 6 months ago.  Now there is a light-colored hypopigmentation patch there at the injection.  When I felt it, it was like a dimple/small crater and somewhat deep.  I really hate that this has happened to my skin and buttock area.  If I would have known that this would be a side effect then I would have declined the shot.  I believe the dermatologist gave a higher than normal dosage to get rid of an allergic rash that I was experiencing.  From reading the posts, I'm optimistic that that things will go back to normal.  I have had the shots before and never any issues....so I feel that the nurse who did it wasn't good at this technique. Thank you for your posts and I look forward to this issue going away.  Never again will I take the injection shot. Awful adverse reaction and I don't trust it anymore.

This happened to me too. I went back to my Dr and she said that sometimes the nurse does not put the sh*t in deep enough so it does eat the cellulite in that spot. She said other then going to a cosmetic Dr to get saline injections there is not much else to do. She also told me it is permanent but will not grow larger because the shot was localized

there is an ointment that you can be given that will make the dent pop back out you should ask your doctor or dermatologist about it

I have always gotten Kenalog shots whenever I get a sinus infection. The dimple in my butt is well worth it for the instant relief from the shot. I usually massage the shot site beginning the day after the shot, and the dimples always go away.

I too have the divot in the upper portion of my butt and my rheumatologist said give it a year. She said it was because I was so thin and that if I was heavier it wouldn't be noticed. I didn't care for that response( she was slightly overweight) I just want this to look normal again. I Exercise often myself and hope that helps it eventually

I think I have the same thing and it is freaking me out a bit, how are you doing?

I too recieved a steroid injection in my buttock, for psorasis, by my dermatologist. She did tell me that a small dimple could be a possible side effect at the injection site. The way she described it was that it rarely happens and that the dimpling would be very small if it occured. It is now 7 months later and yes I got the dimpling and my skin at the injection site is discolored, (looks pale, no pigment). The dimpling seems to get worse as time passes. Its more like a crater. I hate it and had I known it would get this bad, i'd have never gone through with it. I don't believe there is anything that can be done about it unfortunately. If anyone has had any luck or success with a possible solution, please share!

I had a Kenalog shot administered in my left butt cheek 01/09/15. I noticed many issues within a few weeks of receiving the shot but the most obvious related directly to the shot was an indention forming about a month later. Now its a crater in the fat/ muscle tissue and seems to be gradually getting worse to the day. In recent research I have done , I read about many people having these issues with this drug that date back years and years. My doctor failed to mention any side effects and I'm wanting to find out the correct course of action to take since this is causing perminant disfiguring in my buttox. If anyone has any information, please share.
