If you want to lose weight, the math is simple. You need to burn more calories than you consume. However, while the math behind weight loss may sound simple, the effort to achieve it isn't. It requires a lot of effort, and the battle you'd lead would be long and exhausting, but also fruitful and satisfying once you achieved your goals.

Weight loss requires a lot of physical exercises because it's the most efficient way to burn all consumed calories. You'd also have to become thoughtful about the food you eat and the daily calorie intake.

Counting calories could be a daunting and annoying task, almost impossible without some kind of assistance. Many people rely on their mobile phones they always carry around, which could be also utilized as tools for counting calories thanks to many weight loss and activity tracker apps available on the market.

Here on SteadyHealth, we wrote several comprehensive reviews of those mobile apps, including UP by Jawbone, FitBit and Calorie Counter by MyFitnessPal among others.

Another app we review today is one of the most popular weight loss and calorie tracker apps called Lose It! app. This app is available for Android and iOS users, helping them track all the foods they eat in a day. It also tracks users' activity (exercise), which helps to provide more accurate results for their net calorie intake.

A basic version of the app is free to download and use. The app also offers Premium version that offers additional benefits and can be purchased for $39.99 per year.

Upon opening for the first time, Lose It! app would require users to create an account, by providing basic information, including age, gender, height, and weight. Next step would be setting your goal weight, along with the pace you'd like to reach your goal at. After providing the data, you'd see the goal date with daily calorie budget. The final step is providing your email address and setting a password, after which you're good to go.

The app opens to the main screen that contains several features and tool grouped in tabs that enable you to see graphs, stats, to add food or exercise, etc. While it may seem overwhelming at first, the app is very easy to use thanks to the nicely designed and user-friendly interface.

To start counting apps you should start adding foods to your daily meals, which include standard choices such as breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.

Lose It! app uses an extensive database of foods that contains almost any U.S. brand name for both supermarket and restaurant foods along with calorie count for each. This is certainly one of the highlights of the app. To avoid browsing through the extensive list of foods, you can use search tool that works quickly and accurately. Lose It! app also utilizes phone camera as a barcode scanner, which makes adding foods even easier.

Once you've added the food, the Lose It! app also adds it automatically in "My foods" section, so you can find your favorite foods there. The app also keeps track of your previous meals, allowing you repeat them at the tap of your finger.

Lose It! app also allows users to add their own recipes, by entering the ingredients and setting the number of servings to get calories per serving estimation.

However, losing weight isn't just about how many calories you consume, but how many calories you burn as well. Lose It! app allows you to add and track your exercise adding it to the total count of your daily calorie budget. You can track any activity provided by the app, or choose to add your own.

Lose It! app can be synced with other apps and devices, including activity trackers such as FitBit or UP by Jawbone, weight loss devices such as Withings wireless scales, or health apps such as Walgreens. The app also connects to native Apple Health on iPhone, for example when counting daily steps.

Lose It! app has strong social component, which can be essential for motivation. It encourages users to add their real-life friends, make new friendships by using the app, join support groups that are tailored to various specific goals, accept various challenges, and so on.
The app rewards users with badges for various achievements, for example, if they consistently log their meals, exercise every day, etc.

Users can set reminders so they don't forget their activities, i.e. to add meals, sleep or exercise at certain times.

Lose It! app generates graphs and reports that track all activities, from calorie and nutrient intake, diet balance, to weekly summaries. Users can email these reports to themselves.

A lot of app's features aren't available in free version of the app, requiring Premium purchase to be unlocked, which can be too pricey to some users. However, the free version of Lose It! app still can be used as a basic and useful tracker.

Overall, I'm very pleased with Lose It! app, which is one of the best calorie-tracking apps I've encountered. It will help you log your food and activity every day in a convenient way thanks to an intuitive and easy-to-use interface.
