It's ok to take them both. But they need to be taken in moderate doses because they both have similar effects. However wellbutrin acts more on as a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor as well as a mild dopamine reuptake inhibitor, and aderall is a dopamine agonist. This means that aderall creates more dopamine, and wellbutrin stops the breakdown of dopamine as well as ads a "coffee" effect by also diminishing breakdown of the fight hormone norepinephrine. So taking them both results in great focus (dopamine) and motivation to do something about it (norepinephrine). However, to much dopamine creates so much focus that you become obsessed. Thus you run the risk to get OCD and become paranoid and obsessed about the simplest things. This is why they should be taken in moderation without exceeding the recommended dosage.

Maybe in theory wellbutrin and adderall seem like they'd be a great pair but I can tell you from personal experience that this is not the case--not for me of anyone else I know. I've been on adderall for years and it works for me (possibly placebo effect at this point, I know) but my dr and psychiatrist have both prescribed me wellbutrin with the adderall at various doses for various periods of time (I always end up quitting it then months or years later giving it another try though don't ask why I even bother).

It works great for about the first 2 weeks then BAM it's like someone flips a switch and it turns me into a zombie. Obviously there's something going on chemically but every time I've mentioned it to the psychiatrist she tells me that wellbutrin shouldn't be blunting the effects of the adderall (I believe she is genuinely stumped by this) and sort of shrugs it off.

But it definitely ends up blunting the effects of adderall and makes me foggy minded and inattentive. If I was a child with hyperactivity maybe it would be great for calming me down and getting me to shut the **** up but I'm not taking it for help with that. I do experience a bit of obsessiveness and possibly, in the beginning, increased anxiety while on the 2 of them--but I also experience the inability to get anything done and a completely apathetic attitude towards everything so I guess it all balances out and equals ZOMBIE. I have read of this blunting effect happening to other people online--in fact I once read that this eventually tends to happen when you combine adderall with pretty much any SSRI, and I don't doubt it. Maybe the combined effect is just too much so the brain just shuts off the key chemicals or something; i don't know.

You could not be more wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do some research - NOW! FDA rules are very different for Generics. 80% to 110% rule. Look it up. Only the active ingredients and the method of delivery have to be the same. The fillers can be anything that the manf. wants. Can you tell me the difference between active and filler when it comes to medications?

NOT TRUE! I've been on both the brand wellbutrin and the generic and it was like "night and day" for me. On the generic I was angry and suicidal and it was DEFINATELY DIFFERENT!! Maybe not everyone responds to the difference the same as me but I KNOW from experience that they CANNOT be chemically the same. I am just fine on the brand wellbutrin and I'm currently on 300 Mgs of SR along with adderall 30 Mgs. So sorry but your incorrect!

Don't use your R.N. as being an authority. YOU DON"T KNOW this person as her MD does and have no right to diagnose

May I ask if you have ADHD? My son does and the doctor just prescribed the combination recently. He also has other behavior disorders.

I sincerely hope you don't have or never plan on having children.

Actually, I'm on both, if taken correctly they work well together. Adderall is for ADD/ADHD while welbutrin is for depression, and can be used as a smoking cessation. So, if your parents aren't ADD/ADHD, I would ask the dr why they're on that med..

It's actually not the same thing. If you consider a hamburger and a taco the same thing then you are right. The generics have additional ingredients that the brand name does not have and vice versa. I took a generic version and it was absolute hell.

Here is an example of what I am talking about:

WELLBUTRIN XL, 150 mg or 300 mg (pills are identical except for volume), brand, manufactured/distributed by Valeant,

ethyl cellulose (several possible functions, including preservative and bulking)
glyceryl dibehenate (several possible functions)
methacrylic acid – ethyl acrylate copolymer type a
polyethylene glycols (sustained release, binder; other possible functions)
polyvinyl alcohol (emulsifier, stabilizer)
povidone (binder, sustained release)
silicon dioxide (probably for manufacturing processes)
triethyl citrate

BUPROPION/BUDEPRION HCL XL extended release, manufactured by Actavis

copovidone (binder, sustained release)
hydrochloric acid (pH control)
hydroxypropyl cellulose (manufacturing process or possibly sustained release)
methacrylic acid (presumably sustained release)
polyethylene glycols
polyvinyl alcohol
silicon dioxide
sodium bicarbonate (odor absorption, antacid)
sodium lauryl sulfate (excipient)
talc
titanium dioxide
triethyl citrate

How do you find the effects of taking both adderall and Wellbutrin? I'm on Wellbutrin myself but find that it doesn't help that much towards my ability to focus and was thinking of talking to my GP about taking both

Seriously hit the nail on the head and made me feel so much better when you said

"You gotta understand, people like me dont want these medications to get high or lose weight. We need them to function in the world, so that we can be good mothers and fathers and wives and husbands. It isn't about a lack of energy, Its a lack of mental togetherness."

So thank you for that, so incredibly nice to know that I'm not the only one that feels this way :)

I have tried the generic brand twice because the brand was so expensive and my insurance put it as a tier 3 . It is not the same I am a nurse also and after 3 months on generic I felt like I was not even taking an antidepressant and my grown kids also noticed emotional changes. Please in putting advice here realize everyone reacts differently to medication we can not bundle it as the same for all people. I found I could get Wellbutrin 150 XL form Direct Success Pharmacy for 50 dollars .

The active ingredient needs to be the same, but inactive ingredients can be whatever the manufacturer chooses.

I was also suicidal on the generic but not on the brand Wellbutrin and I was on 300 mgs with Adderall and was fine before I took it to quit smoking once before and it helped and I'm thinking of trying it again and asking my Dr for it but the Zyban brand this time because that's what my insurance company covers. But you're right about the brand and the generic NOT being the same....I definitely know that one is a FACT unfortunately!! =(
