Besides having natural side-effects, men taking this drug sometimes complain of feeling shrinkage of their penis. Is this a fact or just a distorted perception?
What is Adderall?
Adderall is a medicine that may be used in the treatment of a specific sleeping disorder (narcolepsy) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It may also be given to treat specific psychological and social problems as well. It also helps with improving concentration and focusing abilities.
How Does Adderall Work?
Adderall contains a combination of two neurotransmitters, namely amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. These chemicals stimulate the central nervous system by affecting the brain and nerves, and subsequently control hyperactivity and electrical impulses. It is believed that this drug helps to restore the balance of these neurotransmitters in the brain.
What are the Side-effects of Adderall?
Some common side-effects of Adderall include:
- Changes in heartbeat
- Dryness of mouth
- Loss of appetite
- Stomach pain
- Elevated blood pressure
- Difficulty urinating
- Strange sensations under skin
- Unexplained wounds
- Bruising of skin
Side-effects after long-term use may include the following:
- Muscular twitching
- Long-lasting and painful penis erection
- Mood swings
Does Adderall Shrink Your Penis?
YES, this may be among the side-effects of Adderall. There are many explanations why this may happen.
One of the side-effects of Adderall is vasoconstriction. Vasoconstriction is a phenomenon that causes a decrease in the flow of blood as a result of the constriction of blood vessels. This may also be happening in other parts of the body, but the only visible and prominent effect is in the genital area. This is because the penis consists of only blood vessels to attain and maintain its shape. This effect may prolong for as long as one month. However, once an erection is achieved, the penis will attain its normal size again, since an erection causes increased blood flow to the penis. Another important point to know is that such drugs will not cause erectile dysfunction.
Another aspect through which Adderall could cause shrinkage of the penis is its interaction with the protein elastin. Adderall causes the breakdown of elastin. This results in the shortening of the ligament at which the base of the penis is attached. This aspect may cause shrinkage of the penis in both its flaccid and erect states.
A third reason why Adderall may affect the size of the penis is found in signalling pathways. Using this drug initiates a cascade in the smooth muscle cells of the penis, causing them to die. This physically reduces the actual mass of the penis, thus causing a physical reduction in the size of the penis.
The three reasons stated above may not be reversible.
Who Should Not take Adderall?
Be sure to tell your doctor regarding any of the following conditions if you are prescribed Adderall. Some interactions can even result in death:
- Taken a MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Allergic to amphetamine or dextroamphetamine
- Family history of muscle twitching
- Tourette's syndrome
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Peripheral vascular disease
- Raynaud's syndrome
- History of drug abuse or addiction
- History of mental illness (psychosis)
Any drug that affects your nervous system should be taken according to your physician's recommendation. Not everybody, but quite a number of people have been found to have side-effects of such drugs.
