It appears that you have been through it all just like I have. It seems the treatments help somewhat at the time but they definitely come back!
Don't remember the info I told on previous post but most recently I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. Knowing that Fibromyalgia is what they diagnose you with when they can't find the root of the problem I went to another Neuro.
The Neuro ordered a new MRI of my neck and brain (never before had I had a brain MRI!). He is still saying my neck looks fine...but they found spots on my brain on the MRI.
I'm still awaiting another appt. to see what he has to say. I know he was looking for MS.
Let's keep blogging...maybe one person's findings might give insight to anothers and we won't have to suffer so much all of the time.
One thing I wanted to ask you....did they ever try you on Lyrica, Cymbalta or Neurotin? Any results?
I've tried all but neurotin until now and it seems to give me a weird intense headache on the top of my head. If you have tried this does it do that to you?
Thanks. Karen

Hey Teach, 14 months since surgery, how are you doing? I have only 4days and counting for my surgery. Here is the skinny: C3/4,C4/5,bulging, C5/6,C6/7 herniated with C6 ontop of nerve cutting my arm to less than nothing. Truck driver without a right arm? It is like a truck driver without a truck! Arm is 25-35% smaller than the left. My 8yr can beat me arm wrestling, you know the rest. Electric shock upon laughter, coughing, sneezing and anything else that a muscle reaction is required.

Anyway, Dec 5th is my surgery date. Bone Bank being utilized, with a cervical collar that aligns the electrons in your neck (blah, blah, blah). In short, it is to help in fusion of the bones. 4hrs a day, for the first couple of weeks.

This site is good (I guess), in accordance to the averages, 99.2% of all ACDF goes witout problems. On this site, I would say it is much much less. Like in half!

Interested in your recovery, so I can start planning my New Year. I had been hoping to be back to work by March 2009. The way everyone is talking here, I will be lucky to be back at all!

Take Care

Hi Dolphin Blu; I did have surgery and it went remarkably well. I did start my own blog only to give us folks looking for the good and the bad some ideas what to expect. My father told me years ago in order to make an informed decision, you must take the good as well as the bad. Hope all is well with you and thanks for the XMas greetings. I hope your Christmas finds you well and the New Years renders you painless ;-)

Here is the link to my blog, let me know if you like it. Most do, some (believe it or not) don't.

Hello! My name is Bruno, I'm 32 years old and I am in Lisbon, Portugal.

I had anterior cervical discectomy surgery in 23/12/2008 (4 days ago). C5/C6. I'm wearing a cervical collar, and I'm taking anti-inflamatory pills.

The pain in my left arm and fingers got much better after surgery, but it still hurts (it dropped from a level 9 to a level 3 of pain). Now, I'm able to sleep for 6, 7 hours. Before surgery, I couldn't even lay down in my back.

Did you also feel like this? Less pain but still pain? Does the pain get better after a few days/weeks? Are you doing any kind of terapy after surgery to reduce the pain and inflamation in the arm? I'm thinking in putting some ice in my shoulder and arm.

The Doc told me to do my normal life, right away! To drive, to work, etc. The only restrition is to wear the cervical collar for 2, 3 weeks. Did you have a similar experience?

Thanks!

Bruno, not being a doctor but my surgeon fore-bid me to use NSAFDs period. Not sure about Portugal, and the makes or brands of over the counter meds. I am only allowed Tylenol based drugs. Acetaminophen is the only drug type (which is in Tylenol) that I am allowed to take while waiting for fusion. At least this is what my surgeon (32yr veteran) is telling me.

I would be looking into that, I have read that in more than one place. As far as my Dr., he allowed me to drive after 13th day post surgery. As far as normal life, he told me to do what I can until it hurts. Nothing that has reps in it. Shovling snow, raking leaves, pushing or pulling things over 15#. As for my collar, only used it for 3wks while riding in a car. I was instructed to utilize it while traveling only for support. My Dr. said not to wear it all the time that it will be a longer recovery due to my neck muscles with need to be re-built also. Mind you - I am plated, so my cervical spine is sturdy because of the Titanium Plate (w/6 screws). As I have on this blog, my link is over - my day to day, and week to week process. Remember, you are not alone. Very common operation at least here in the US.

Take Care,
Tom

I had my surgery ( dissection and fussion of c4-c7 using cadaver and my own bone for graft with a titanium plate & screws)on 9/30/08 and am still having alot of pain. The x-rays shown that the graft is taking . I am depressed that there is still so much pain present, especially on the right side and during sleep. Actually , sleeping for more then an hour or 2 at a time is nearly non existing.I had a lot of bone spurs and herniation they said it was a mess. I had a prior surgery in 05 on c6 the fussion did not take causing more injury to additional discks. Just wondweing if anybody may have any suggestions?

I am scheduled to have the ACDF surgery with the donor graft in several weeks. I am also on Gleevec ( an inhibitor pill for cancer) to help prevent my tumors from returning. I am concerned that my pain will remain the same and or the healingprocess will be slower. I have read so many posts and am torn on what the best decission is. As of now, both my arms and shoulders hurt so bad, and I am meds just to help deal with the pain. Being on the Gleevec I can not take ibuprohen or tylenol. I have to manke 4 trips a yr to Houston to MD Anderson, so the riding in a car for long periods of time could be an issue for me. It is a 7 hr trip, and I am there for 3 days each visit. I need to be able to drive as my husband is gone alot as he works 2 jobs since I lost mine due to my illnesses. If anyone else must spend alot of time in a car and or do things for themselves are happy with their outcomes or not, please let me know your thoughts.
May god bless us all!

I am one of the unlucky ones as far as my recovery after my ACDF. BUT Have the surgery! I would do it again if I had to. I would just have more done than my 1st time.
Good luck,
Rob

Hello everyone, I have read alot of your posts on this surgery. I will be ahving this surgery in a few weeks and wanted to know the TRUE expectations of full recovery. I am also on Gleevec for GIST(gastrostromal ntestinal tumors} and wondered if anyone knows if this drug could sloe the healing process as it can drain my body of calcium and vit D.
I am very nervous about this surgery, and words of comfort would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Tami
